HISTORY OF THE SHACK DWELLERS FEDERATION OF NAMIBIA

This Federation was established in October 1998 by 30 housing groups that had been formed in Namibia since the late eighties.  These groups were members of a previous voluntary association, Namibia Housing Action Group (NHAG) established in 1992, and were involved in housing projects.  The name NHAG was given to their support NGO when the members decided to separate the service unit of NHAG from the People’s Organisation. Following the establishment of the Federation a dynamic people’s movement developed in Namibia, with  605 saving groups in most of the urban areas as well as rural areas by June 2013.

SDFN VISION

The Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia (SDFN) is a network of housing saving schemes, aims to improve the living conditions of low-income people living in shacks, rented rooms and those without accommodation, while promoting women's participation. SDFN is affiliate to Shack Dwellers International (SDI).
